Bart, I have to see this documentary. Fascinating indeed.

Even after reading What Is The What, by Dave Eggers (which I highly recommend), I am still floored by the kind of culture shock immigrants must have, especially moving to somewhere like Pittsfield, USA.

Indeed. One of the things I enjoy the most about living in Malaysia is observing the culture (as frustrating as it is sometimes). When you live your life experiencing only one culture, it’s easy to believe it’s the ‘right’ one; the ‘right’ way to do things.

We were talking recently with friends here about the call to prayers (Muslim) you hear in the morning and evenings blasting through loud speakers around town. There has been a successful campaign to stop this broadcast in Petaling Jaya (I think), but I’m not sure on what basis (freedom of religion?). I personally love it; more specifically I love hearing this as a reminder that other cultures exist, and should be experienced.

I will put that book on my book voucher list.
